Now being Single and Alzheimer’s related!

November 27, 2009 · 1 Comment

And I thought I’d heard everything…

Just when you thought you’d heard it all I found a link between being Single and Alzheimer’s Disease on an Arizona news site from Kyle Burke.

Thanks to Kyle for reminding us that November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Now that’s definitely something we should be helping to support – goodness knows it seems the likelihood of loads of us being afflicted with the disease is seemingly high!

I think most of us know that Doctors say that maintaining your brain health early on could be key in preventing memory loss later in life. Jan Dougherty, Director of Family and Communication Services at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute explains: “Because Alzheimer’s often starts decades before it presents with symptoms, we should be thinking in our 30’s and 40’s about lifestyle strategies, about diet, exercise, cognitive exercise, staying engaged throughout our lives.”

The bad news as per Kyle’s report,  is a recent study found that Single people are twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease as married or cohabitating people.

“We’re creatures that do better when we are in communication and living with other peoples, so there’s something about socialization that’s really important to brain health,” Dougherty said.

And just in case you’ve forgotten… some of the common symptoms of memory loss are:
- forgetting names (does this count if you couldn’t remember them in the first place?)
- forgetting recent events (not due to alcohol consumption though!)
- forgetting appointments and dates (can’t bear to meet that online date you made?)
- misplacing items / finding items in strange places – (not male are you – never put things in the same place twice do you!)
- getting lost or confused in familiar places (now I’m geographically challenged so that’s a killer for me all the time)
- having difficulty finding words or putting sentences together (again watch that alcohol consumption – definitely makes it a challenge!)
- changes in behavior or personality (of course that has nothing to do with the type of day you are having or the road rage incident that’s just happened, or the 6 Red Bulls you just consumed…)

This is not an attempt at trivialising the severe impact Alzheimer’s disease has on the sufferer as well as families and friends. It is tragic to be a part of this situation. So, if you are experiencing some of those memory loss symptoms above – and forget about my little italicized comments alongside them, do go seek some help. Same goes for if you suspect someone else may be displaying some of these symptoms, see if you can find a way to guide them to seek out help.

But, back to the Singles of the world. We all need love, friendship, companionship, and if you can find a life partner who can offer all that and more – it could be as simple as that to ward off Alzheimers. So, all I can say is get out there, display your Single status SHI Symbol everywhere you go so you can meet loads of new and interesting men and women more easily, and if you’re inclined to look for a partner, it’ll be working for you 24/7. It’s a sure fire way to help ward off Alzheimer’s. Can’t guarantee they won’t send you demented for other reasons though!

And on another note, if you are interested in helping your local Alzheimer’s Association with much needed funds to help support research as well as support sufferers and their families – SHI Symbol has an excellent avenue that will help you, them and is something that’s super popular with everyone around the world. Just email me for the details – jan@shisymbol.com.au

You won’t forget to do it now, will you?

BTW – Happy Thanksgiving Day to everyone.

Interesting dating stats – yes there are always more…

October 30, 2009 · 2 Comments

Making the most of meeting your match?

Making the most of meeting your match?

Somehow found the latest facts and figures via an article by Meredith Broussard of www.Match.com fame. Thought I’d share a few with you:

If you are on a bit of a downer re finding your perfect match – think again. With over 100 million unattached people out there in the US alone – yes that is 44% of adult Americans who are Single – there is definitely hope – forget the tag of ‘there’s nobody out there for me!” – just got to get out there and meet a few more!

There are definitely better places statistically to find someone.  Typically – guys win again with 86 of them for every 100 unmarried women. Having said that, the gender ratio does favour women in some areas, especially out west. Paradise, Nevada, a suburb 10 miles out from Las Vegas has 118 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women. Other good ‘odds’ places for women include Austin, texas; Santa Ana, California and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Washinton DC has the best proportion of Singles in the States with a massive 70% of the population being Single. The worst places for ‘options’ include Idaho and Utah with 60% and 59% respectively of the population being married.

The story goes on to say, on a date, first impressions do count. With men – they’ve decided in the first 15 minutes whether the woman is worth a second date! Apparently women ponder a fair bit longer about getting together again – takes us an hour or so!

And if you thought online dating was bad enough – wait for it – breaking up amongst online daters is frequently done via email – like to the tune of 48%.

On that note, there has to be more to life than emailing, twittering, Facebooking and online dating. It’s called just get out there and meet others. There are plenty of them to choose from. And of course you know with your SHI Symbol it just makes it that much easier – anywhere in the world!

This is your ideal way to REALLY fundraise while you reap some of the rewards at the same time

Travel is certainly something close to everyone’s hearts. And I’m going by  the amount of traffic to this blog whenever I have something related to travel!

Now, imagine if you could combine your love of travel with SHI Symbol and being able to REALLY give back to your favorite cause, charity or project. If you have someone or some organisation who could definitely do with extra funds we have a way that will be just perfect for you. And I promise you  it’s nothing to do with cake stalls, selling chocolates, lamington drives and lapathons!

I will post something on this blog shortly that will make it just the easiest way to raise money for that special need or your special charity. In the meantime, please just let me know (via the blog here or the website) of the people, charities, projects, fundraising needs you might like to see helped. We are finalising arrangements to make this happen now.

thanks so much – Jan

Hilarious Pick Up Lines

October 20, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hilarious pick up lines on SHI Symbol Blog

Hilarious pick up lines on SHI Symbol Blog

Came across these hilarious if sometimes crude pick up lines. Some are worth a laugh. I can’t take credit for any of them, they were compiled by Drdating.com – I just thought I’d share a giggle with you.  Would love to know if someone’s actually had success with one of these – it would be unbelievable! The things we Singles have to put up with…

  • Do you believe in free love? (Certainly no!) Then how much do you cost?
  • Do you believe in helping the homeless? [If yes] Take me home with you.
  • Do you believe in Santa Claus? Do you think that if I am good this year, he’ll put you in my stocking this year?
  • Do you believe in the hereafter? Then you know what I’m here after.
  • Do you have any tacos on you? (No.) In that case, will you make out with me?
  • Do you like to dance? Well then, could you go dance so I can talk to your friend?
  • Excuse me, are you ready to go home yet? I lost my rubber duckie. Would you bathe with me instead?
  • I may not be Fred Flintstone, but I bet I can make your bed rock!
  • I’d really like to see how you look when I’m naked.
  • If I said you had a beautiful body, would you throw it on top of me?
  • If you think Chewbacca is hairy, wait till you see my Wookie.
  • I’ll cook you dinner if you cook me breakfast.
  • I’m like Domino’s Pizza. If I don’t cum in 30 minutes, the next one is free.
  • It must be cold in here – or are you just happy to see me?
  • Motion with one finger for a girl to come to you. When, or if she comes, say: I just made you come with one finger. Imagine what I could do with two.
  • Kissing is a language of love….so how about a conversation?

My Blog is meant to be for fun and entertainment. Please do not get offended with the above jokes if they are a little too risque for your taste. It’s not something we publish everyday. This is to help us laugh – did you know it is excellent exercise for your lungs not to mention when you smile and laugh you exercise your face muscles much more than when you frown, hence I’m all for the laughing at all times!

Enjoy!

Local Romantic First Date Ideas that Won’t Break the Bank…

October 13, 2009 · 1 Comment

This post is with thanks to Bethany North who shared a great idea that culminated in an even more beautiful outcome. You never know, the same might happen for you too – and we want to know about it, pics and all – OK?

If you are looking for an interesting idea for a first date, it is necessary to think outside of the box. Dinner and a movie is so played out, so why not try something local and romantic that is perfect for anyone on a budget?

My boyfriend and I were best friends in high school, so when it came time for us to have our first date almost a decade later, it definitely needed to be special. We had confessed our feelings to each other, which seemed almost perfect since we were already best friends. We were ready to move forward with our relationship, but we wanted to take it beyond typical first-day activities into something that would be memorable. That’s exactly why we decided together to pick a park near our house and have a wine and cheese picnic. This is something that you always see in the movies, but it is not as cheesy as it sounds, no pun intended!

We both love a good glass of wine, so it was really fun to pick out some delicious cheeses and pair them with the type of red wine that we had selected. If you are planning a wine and cheese picnic, then you can purchase the menu items yourself beforehand, or you can even take your date with you to pick out the cheeses as a fun predate activity. We just brought the bare necessities of supplies with us, like wine glasses, a cheese knife, and some paper plates. It was a very low scale and budget version of a fancy picnic, but that was what made it fun for us.

The date went very well, obviously, and it was the ideal way to get to know someone even better because you have the chance to talk to each other. Many times, when people choose a movie for their first date, there is absolutely no way to interact and get to know the other person. This is also the same scenario as going to a loud and crowded bar because you don’t get the opportunity to truly talk and connect on your date. Having a wine and cheese picnic at a nearby park shows that you put a lot of thought into your first date idea, and it also allows you to relax and have a good time without any pressure. This wine and cheese picnic was special for my boyfriend and I because it was our first date as an official couple, and we are still going strong!

Having a relaxed and fun evening like this will also give you the chance to spark up your friendship with your date because you get to talk and get to know them even further. Friendship is absolutely the best foundation for any relationship, which is why I am so fortunate have fallen in love with my best friend. For any guys out there, this is also an amazing way to impress your lady on a first date because it is quite a romantic setting, and it’s also a budget friendly option for a first date activity! You can’t go wrong.

Don’t you just love this lovely romantic story. It’s just the ideal date option because it is budget friendly and romantic. Loved this pic so had to share it with you – typo and all!

My motto is ‘live life to its fullest’ and if you can do it with a smile on your face, so much the better. Take a look around you next time you smile – it’s infectious. It works wonders when you’re Single, wanting to chat to someone but are a little shy/SHI to do much else.

We CAN make a difference in the world – and in our dating quests and a smile will start us off  – try it, the least it can do is make you – SMILE !!!
